August 2013Robert Collins recently retired as a shareholder after more than 40 years of faithful service to clients and our firm. Bob was an engineer and manager at Control Data Corporation before joining our firm, he was an Adjunct Professor of Law at the University of Detroit-Mercy Law School, and is a co-author of several editions of the “Casebook on Patent Law,” published by the West Publishing Company. Bob will be missed, but he remains "Of Counsel" to the firm. We wish Bob and his family a very long, happy, and healthy retirement.Dan Hegner has been appointed the Editor-in-Chief for the AIPLA Patent Law Committee (PLC) Newsletter. This quarterly newsletter focuses on patent prosecution, committee-specific news, and highlights of one PLC member per issue. Formed in 1897, the American Intellectual Property Law Association has approximately 16,000 members and is actively involved in shaping US intellectual property policy through its work on legislation, federal regulations, and intellectual property cases in the US courts.Matt Schmidt recently attended the annual meeting for the International Trademark Association (INTA) in Dallas, Texas. INTA is a global association of trademark owners and professionals dedicated to supporting trademarks and related intellectual property. During this conference, Matt met with attorneys from several countries including Canada, Germany, Italy, Spain, Japan and China to discuss recent developments in trademark and product design laws throughout the world.Corey Beaubien attended Design Day 2013 at the U.S. Patent Office in Alexandria on April 23. The conference brought together attorneys, examiners, and industrial designers to discuss the state of design patent law in the U.S. and around the world. Presentations included the written description requirement under 35 USC 112 following the In re Owens decision, U.S. implementation of the Hague Agreement, protecting icons and graphical user interfaces (GUIs) via design patents, and the role of design patents in the Apple v. Samsung litigation.
Dan Hegner and Anthony Gartrelle attended World IP Day hosted in Detroit this year at TechShop Detroit in Allen Park. The annual event promotes creativity and provides a forum to discuss intellectual property issues and showcase and exhibit some of their accomplishments.
