Rick Hoffmann, Mike Druzinski and Colin Cicotte successfully defended the firm’s client BorgWarner in a patent infringement suit filed by Modine Manufacturing Company. Modine alleged that BorgWarner infringed its U.S. Patent 8,033,323 related to an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) cooler. In a decision handed down June 10, 2014, the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit issued a unanimous Judgment affirming the Eastern District of Wisconsin court's decision to grant BorgWarner’s motion for summary judgment of non-infringement, concluding that BorgWarner’s accused EGR coolers do not infringe any claim of the Modine patent.
We are pleased to announce that Patent Attorney William Kolakowski has joined the firm. Kolakowski’s practice focuses on the acquisition and management of worldwide patent and trademark portfolios. He has worked with a wide variety of technologies including medical devices (including medical imaging systems, medical device position tracking and navigation systems, and electrophysiological mapping and ablation catheters), engine and motor control systems, motor architectures, data storage and retrieval, electronic interfaces, sensors, power transmission devices, and vehicle components.; and handling numerous appeals to the Patent Trial and Appeal Board. He also has extensive experience litigating intellectual property disputes.
Scott Hogan and Michael Druzinski have been elected shareholders of the firm. Scott’s expertise includes laser-based manufacturing processes, nanomaterials and nanotechnology, microfabricated devices, and automotive components. Michael’s particular field of expertise revolves around next generation alternative energy technologies including fuel cells, lithium ion batteries, and hydrogen storage and delivery systems. Both Scott and Michael are recognized as a Michigan Super Lawyers’ Rising Star for 2014; Scott was also a Rising Star for 2013.
Jim Stevens, in his tenth year as an intellectual property adjunct professor at the University of Detroit Mercy Law School, recently traveled to Sydney, Australia where he met with colleagues in the IP business and presented on recent changes in US law including the America's Invent Act and the Patent Law Treaty Implementation Act.
Several Reising attorneys attended an intellectual property conference hosted by the State Bar of Michigan. The conference included nationally renowned speakers and provided an opportunity for continuing the legal education of those that attended.Hoffmann and Stevens were named to Superlawyers® 2014 list of Top Lawyers. Hogan and Druzinski were named to their 2014 Rising Stars list.
Stephanie Pietrangelo has joined the firm as an Intern. She is in her third year of law school, attending the University of Detroit Mercy. In 2012, Stephanie received an Honor Bachelor of Science Degree with a double major in chemistry and political science.
